- Best new entrant of the year: Orange Tunisia
- Best Solution for Rural Services: the community phone concept
Orange won two major telecommunication industry awards at the AfricaCom Awards 2010. The awards gala dinner took place on Wednesday, 10 November in Cape Town, South Africa. The awards are a unique annual celebration of innovation and the highest achievements across the communications industry in Africa. An independent panel of judges adjudicates.
Orange won the "Best New Entrant of the year award" for the successful launch of Orange Tunisia in May 2010 as the first alternative convergent operator in the country. Since its launch, Orange Tunisia has run a dynamic marketing campaign aimed both at the pre-paid segment and the middle- to high-end segments with innovative offers, such as "Internet Everywhere" dongles, Flybox, iPhone 4, etc., based on the quality of its network. The operator has invested heavily in the deployment of its exclusive 3G network, which already offers coverage for over 50% of the population.
The France Telecom-Orange Group also won the "Best solution for Rural services" award for its community phone concept. This solution makes life easier for people living in isolated rural communities by offering them access to telecommunications services. Orange provides complete kits to micro-entrepreneurs enabling them to become telecom operators for the local community by selling access and airtime. The antenna supplied picks-up the signal from the nearest GSM base station (at a distance of up to 35 kms) enabling the entrepreneur to provide access in a zone that does not have any other network coverage. This provides a communications gateway for remote communities and improves living conditions by stimulating the local economy. The solution, which was launched in Mali in October 2010 under the name Djamaa Phone, has connected 200 previously isolated villages.
Commenting after receiving the awards Marc Rennard, Executive Vice President of the France Telecom-Orange Group responsible for Africa, the Middle East and Asia said: "It has always been our ambition to provide excellence in the quality of service and innovation for our customers. We are very proud to be awarded by our peers in the telecommunications community. This recognizes the great work done by our teams in Africa and other parts of the world."
