Collaborative research project ARTIST4G - Advanced Radio Interface Technologies for 4G Systems - enters a new phase with its first workshop

Paris, Bruxelles, October 18, 2010
The operational phase of the ARTIST4G project will be formally launched today at a workshop held during the EU Concertation Meeting in Brussels.

The European Commission-funded ARTIST4G project aims to develop innovative technologies based on current 3GPP LTE-Advanced standards in order to improve quality of experience for users of mobile networks. The project follows in the line of the WINNER series of projects, which have proved the efficiency of European-funded projects for maintaining a high level of technological expertise in mobile networks.

ARTIST4G aims to ensure that networks are able to provide rich and uniform connectivity wherever the user is located, in particular by enhancing the quality of service on the cell edge. For this, advanced relaying schemes are under investigation, as well as schemes that involve various degrees of coordination and cooperation between base stations (Coordinated Multi-Point, CoMP) to better serve users regardless of conditions. It is expected that these new technologies will satisfy mobile users’ expectations and increase the economic efficiency of mobile access infrastructure.

During the first phase of the project, members have defined the metrics, targets, scenarios and evaluation methodologies to be used. This will be followed by a second phase, kicked off by the workshop entitled "Delivering ubiquitous mobile experience with ARTIST4G cutting edge technologies", during which members will present technical innovations and research work relevant to the goals of ARTIST4G in order to stimulate discussion and exchange ideas. The first evaluation results will be publicly available on the project's website from March to June 2011.

ARTIST4G gathers major actors from the mobile industry that are able to build consensus on standards development and the design of future networks, as well as academic partners and SMEs, originating from Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the UK. The project partners are Alcatel-Lucent (DE), Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives (FR), Chalmers University of Technology (SE), DOCOMO Euro-Labs (DE), Eurecom (FR), France Telecom-Orange - project coordinator – (FR), Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe (FR), Nomor Research (DE), Nokia Siemens Networks (DE, PL, FI), Qualcomm (DE), Sequans Communications (FR), Telecom Italia (IT), Telefónica I+D (ES), Technische Universität Dresden (DE), Uppsala University (SE) (linked to Chalmers University of Technology) and Vodafone (UK).

The project will run for a period of 30 months ending in June 2012 and aims to pave the way for an accelerated uptake of next generation mobile networks.
