Paris, November 10, 2009Orange is delighted to announce that it has sealed a historic agreement with professional organizations for French cinema: BLIC (Bureau de Liaison des Industries Cinématographiques), BLOC members (Bureau de Liaison des Organisations du Cinéma) - excluding SRF -, and ARP, for its Orange cinema series package. These organizations group together the majority of producers, directors, cinema owners and French cinema distributors.
The agreement has been signed today at the French Ministry for Culture, between Frédéric Mitterrand, Minister for Culture and Communications, Didier Lombard, CEO of France Telecom – Orange, and representatives from professional organizations for French cinema.
This is the first time that a telecommunications operator signs such an agreement with the organizations representing cinema professionals in France.
This five-year agreement reflects a shared vision of new uses by Orange and cinema representatives. Indeed, by combining conventional television and on-demand services, Orange cinema series is meeting audience expectations for culture and entertainment, contributing to the development of the legal offering.
This agreement embodies Orange’s strong and lasting commitment alongside professionals in order to support French and European cinema in all its diversity. Itl also further strengthens and broadens the commitments made by Orange in the agreement signed in 2008 with the Conseil Superieur de l’Audiovisuel (the French audiovisual authority) for its Orange cinema series pay TV package, while enabling Orange to strengthen its partnership with French producers, both through pre-purchase (Orange cinema series) and co-production (Studio 37).
In addition to its groundbreaking approach, this agreement is particularly:
- Ambitious: Orange cinema series guarantees, for its launch phase, a minimum investment of 80 million euros over three years in the French and European cinema. The subsidiary is also committed to ensuring that at least 60% of its obligation to acquire French films concerns pre-purchases.
- Innovative: This agreement takes into account the innovative and interactive features of the Orange cinema series - especially its catch-up TV, service included in the package, that will include revenue-sharing for rights holders.
- Promoting cinematic diversity: Orange cinema series is committed to immediately devoting 25% of its obligation to acquire French films to works with budgets of 5.35 million euros or less.
The package will also provide financial backing for the industry to distribute and show films in cinemas, aiming more specifically to support their digitization, as well as the diversity of film distribution.
Launched on November 13, 2008, Orange Cinéma séries represents the first television package available on TV, PC and mobile phones. It is also the first service to offer on-demand access to all the programs shown on its five dedicated channels. Orange cinema series offers general viewers as well as the most demanding fans all the benefits of an editorialized service devoted 100% to the cinema and series, with a selection of major film exclusives and entirely new series thanks to privileged agreements with the leading producers of programs.
