Orange launches Toshiba TG01 in Europe, with a first-to-market exclusive

Paris, July 09, 2009
First multi-country agreement with Toshiba brings Orange customers the latest in handheld mobile entertainment with the fastest available processing speeds

Paris, 9 July, 2009: Orange today announces the European launch of the Toshiba TG01, a powerful and feature-rich mobile entertainment device which brings customers the ultimate experience in browsing, downloading and viewing content when on the move. In Orange’s first ever pan-European agreement with Toshiba, the TG01 first launched in France last week and today in the UK in a three-month market exclusive. It will be available in Switzerland in a six-month exclusive later this month and in Romania from August. This pan-European launch is the next milestone in Orange’s strategy to bring mobile multimedia to everyone.

Especially customised by Orange for ease of use, the TG01 boasts one of the widest high-definition touch-screens available on a mobile and the latest in chipset technology, all in a compact and lightweight design. The first device ever to have 1GHz processing power, the TG01 combines this with fast mobile broadband connectivity and large storage capacity to create a richer, faster multimedia experience. This enables Orange customers to do more with their phone such as watch TV, update social network pages and browse the web – just like they do on their PC.

Olaf Swantee, SEVP of Orange’s global mobile business says, “At Orange, it is our ambition to help every Orange customer get more out of their mobile. Over 3.2 million customers per month browse the Orange World portal in the UK, and in France we have over 800,000 mobile TV subscribers per month.”  Olaf continues, ”If the experience is good, people want to try new things on their phone. With the TG01’s advanced capabilities, Orange customers can further harness PC-like power in their hands for the best possible access to multimedia services.”

The TG01 will be combined with a select range of country-specific flat-rate tariffs to give customers clear and transparent pricing offers for using multimedia services.  In the UK for example, Orange will offer shortcuts to the best of Orange Video (such as Sky 24/7 Football), and it will come exclusively with a free pre-loaded film trailer, “GI Joe”.  In France, customers can enjoy access to Orange mobile TV which has over 60 channels.  The 4.1” W-VGA screen is perfect size for watching TV, videos and looking at pictures in high quality.

The new TG01 is the first phone from Toshiba to be part of Orange’s successful Signature Series, which takes the best phones and makes them better, giving customers ease of use right from the start.  Orange has customised the TG01 with its homescreen, giving customers easier access to the Internet and applications such as Orange Maps and Orange TV, as well as improving basic functions like one touch access to alarms and calendars. It will also let customers access and download a range of applications from the Orange Applications Store via the Orange World portal.

Kosei Okamoto, President, Toshiba Mobile Communications Company says,  “The TG01 is the future, a truly mobile entertainment device that satisfies consumer demand for total connectivity.  Mr Okamoto continues, “As a pioneer in making mobility, and now mobile multimedia, into a mass market phenomenon, Orange is the ideal partner to bring the Toshiba TG01 across Europe and into the UK for the first time.  The combination of Orange Signature and Toshiba innovation defines a whole new category of high-end entertainment in a mobile.“

Olaf Swantee continues, “This kind of innovation paves the way for the future of mobile where the device in our customers’ hands can truly act as a remote control, connecting and talking to devices in the home, such as fixed phones, PCs, digital TVs and set-top boxes.” Olaf concludes, “As a leading converged operator, we are in the best place to deliver this kind of seamless experience”.
