Orange and the town of Sarlat testing "flashcodes" and developing e-tourism

October 7, 2009 -  In partnership with Orange, the town of Sarlat in the Dordogne Region of France has deployed around 50 "flashcodes" in its streets which tourists can take pictures of with their mobile phones in order to find out more about the sites in question.

In this way, when visitors with a phone plan including internet access use their mobiles to take photos of these pictograms, found at the entrance to the most outstanding sites, they are able to access a web platform offering further information as texts, photos or videos.

Currently limited to historical monuments and only available in French, it could well be extended to include "practical day-to-day services", for instance developing access to opening times for public services, cultural programs, etc.
This is the first time that such a project has been launched in the e-tourism sector. For the time being, this service, which started up at the end of August, is being developed on an experimental scale. The aim is to improve access to information in a medieval city where it is not possible to put up more signs and where 1.5 to 2 million tourists are welcomed each year.
