an insight from Magnum Photos for the Orange Foundation

Moldova by Martine FranckIn 2007, the Orange Foundation invited 7 photographers of Magnum Photos to show its actions in corporate philanthropy. Their work was presented in the exhibition A world to share in Paris at first, then went on tour in several European countries.
Some of them wanted to continue this work ...

In Moldova, state-run boarding schools take care of orphans, but also of children whose families are unable to look after them. Some have visual or hearing impairments. In the present economic climate it is vital to give these children access to education and culture to prevent them from becoming isolated and breaking away from society.

During October 2008, Martine Franck* visited two Moldovan boarding schools supported by the Fundatia Orange and photographed visually and hearing impaired pupils in their day-to-day lives. As she says: « Deafness and sadness don’t necesserily go together. It would be unforgivable to leave hearing impaired children helpless and unable to communicate with the outside world. I was struck by their strong desire to learn sign language, their enthousiasm for communication, and their cheerfulness, which makes you want to help them to fulfil themselves. With a great deal of love, patience and resources, that can be done…”.

Soon, we will also present the work of two other members of Magnum Photos: Alessandra Sanguinetti in Poland and Thomas Dworzak in Romania ...
