Japan and Korea

The group created a research & development centre in Tokyo in July 2001, in line with its strategy of internationalisation of R&D laboratories. Tokyo was chosen because of the very innovative Japanese environment notably in the field of advanced mobile and fixed services.

In February 2004, a branch office in Korea (Seoul) was inaugurated. Korea is one of the most advanced countries, in the field of IT, broadband service and related infrastructure. Being involved in these highly innovative areas allows the centres to detect and analyse innovative technologies and usage in order to bring useful and exciting services to Orange customers.

The Orange Labs in Tokyo concentrates its research in five specific areas: Location Based Services (LBS) and 3D TV, Research on new generation broadband mobile services with Beijing, fixed broadband services and the Impact of robotics on telecommunication and home services.

Market & business ecostructure intelligence and innovation transfer is also a major goal. Japan is a leader in terms of penetration of 3 rd generation mobile services (more than 60 millions of subscribers) and FTTH services (more than 8 millions suscribers).

The presence of the active research work in the telecom field at universities, national institutions, telecom careers and electronic manufacturers brings another opportunity to the Tokyo lab. Several R&D partnerships with Japanese companies and universities have been undertaken.

The Orange Labs in Tokyo has already obtained some solid results. For example, Tokyo lab is actively involved in the experimentation on the mobile Location Based Service, launched in December 2006 in France with Japanese companies.

25 engineers, multi-cultural minded researchers and engineers in focused fields of research, work to enhance the collaboration with local ecosystem.

The Orange Labs in Seoul currently has 6 people focusing on areas of Market Intelligence, Innovation Transfer and Standardisation.

As Korea is a well-known leader in telecommunication infrastructure, services and products, the Seoul lab is watching the local market closely. Many broadband services, Mobile TV, m-payment, LBS, Telematics, Digital home, ubiquitous Robot and RFID technologies are blooming.

The Seoul lab is strongly engaged in Innovation transfer. It detects innovative products and services with the objective of transfering them to the group for future business. The main topics are convergence services from well built wired/wireless infrastructure and innovative devices. Convergence services like mobile/fixed Onephone, mobile/online Cyworld and Idle screen mobile search were successfully transferred to the group. Multi-function USB key, PC in a dongle and 3D display PMP and Game machine developments are under investigation in the device arena.
